They may take their name from one of the more meditative singles in Slowdive’s oeuvre, but Athenian dreampoppers Sugar For The Pill occupy a different musical track, one more uptempo and sun-dappled than their namesakes, thanks in large part to Vana Rose’s soft yet strong vocals and their gift for crafting a strong hook. Some ‘gazers may be content to drift along on clouds of reverb, but SFTP arrive with more direction and propulsion and they are looking for the party.
Their debut album Wanderlust arrived in 2022, and the follow-up Luv is due out in May, precise date still TBA. The first single “Colours” came out almost two years ago and follow-up “Anelia” dropped last week; I’m torn as to which one showcases the band’s strengths better – the former is driving and irresistible with a cool, moody video whereas the latter is brighter with a Cocteaus-esque vocal hook and a clip comprised of tour footage from around the world taken over the last few years. Which to share? Why not both?
