The first incarnation of Echo & The Bunnymen originally split in 1988 when Ian McCulloch left the band – the drama around Reverberation and Electrafixion are topics for another time – but original members McCulloch, Will Sargent, and Les Pattinson eventually found their way back together in 1997 with Evergreen.

The late ’90s were not an era where anyone pressed anything more than a token amount of vinyl, if any at all, so much of the Bunnymen’s reunion discography has been woefully unavailable to wax collectors. 2001’s Flowers and 2005’s Siberia had vinyl editions when they were first released, but were finally reissued earlier this year. Evergreen, however, has never been available as an LP so last week’s 25th anniversary release is very welcome indeed. Now someone do 1999’s What Are You Going To Do With Your Life?.

“Nothing Lasts Forever” was the first single from the record, though I only remember the not-so-subtle innuendo of second single “I Want To Be There When You Come” getting any radio play around wherever I was. It’s elegiac tone is a little odd for a comeback single, but it’s certainly earned its place as one of the band’s best songs. The video was shot in Marrakech, Morocco and I’d be tempted to say something about McCulloch’s big wool coat in the African sun, but having been there and seeing so many locals dressed in down parkas in the blazing heat, I’ll just assume he was trying to fit in.
