One eight-year hiatus aside, Ladytron have been pretty reliable over the past 25 years for releasing collections of sleek-yet-gritty electronic music that’s elevated by their affection for old school analog tech and two elite frontwomen in Helen Marnie and Mira Aroyo.
The band has been busy with a long-overdue reissue series (Light & Magic and Witching Hour were both finally put back into print this year, and Nightlife, an all new remix collection, arrives on Record Store Day this Friday), but considering it’s been three years since their last full-length Time’s Arrow, it’s reasonable to think they were due for new music at some point.
They basically confirmed as much when new single “I Believe In You” showed up in September followed by “I See Red” last month. Now, with a third new song and video for “Kingdom Undersea”, they’ve spilled tea about album number eight – Paradises arrives on March 20.
The new record comes with a particular direction that was new for the band. Daniel Hunt, who also produced the record said:
Every time I went into the studio, I’d come out after an hour with a new track. The key motivation was fun. Everything became fun again.
There’s an itch we never scratched, which is that despite our origins in the DJ world, we never actually made a ‘disco’ record. Albeit, ‘disco’ in our context has a somewhat different meaning.
