You’d be forgiven for thinking that current Hong Kong shoegaze starts and ends with Lucid Express – they’re certainly the flag-bearers – but if Apple Music’s RIYL algorithm is to be believed, HK’s Tofu Kingdom are right up there as well. You’d be forgiven for wanting to dismiss them on the basis of their name alone, but if you did you’d miss out on some pretty enjoyable, fuzzy and synth-friendly dreampop that may not reinvent the wheel but fits real nice into a genre playlist.
They’ve released a batch of singles around their debut 2022 EP Souvenir but I’m going to share their last release, a fuzzy buzzy Sundays cover from last June that arrived too late to be part of my “Here’s Where The Story Ends” iterations post from the year before, but would have fit right in. If you enjoy their vibe, do check out their originals. They won’t disappoint.
